The study investigated validity of the Face Stimulus Assessment (FSA henceforth) as a tool to distinguish the elderlies with dementia and the elderlies without dementia. The participants of this study were 206 elderlies aged 65 or above (89 with dementia, 117 without dementia) living in an urban setting. The CDT and FSA were used as the test tools, and correlation analysis and two-way ANOVA test were performed. In addition, characteristics of the drawings by the participants with dementia and without dementia were analyzed through a content analysis. The results of the study are as follows. First, the CDT scores showed significant differences in the existence of dementia and the extent of education. The FSA scores showed differences in the existence of dementia, but not in the extent of education. Second, the results indicated a positive correlation between CDT and FSA. Third, the content analysis of the CDT and FSA drawings showed that the participants with dementia made more errors than the participants without dementia position. The overall analysis of FSA drawing 1 and 2 showed differences between the participants with dementia and without dementia in the ¡®head shape¡¯, ¡®hair color¡¯, ¡®face color¡¯, ¡®gender expression¡¯, ¡®clothing shape¡¯. These findings suggest that the CDT and FSA can be used as a tool to complement the present measurements to diagnose dementia. Implications and limitations are discussed.
